If Morel's glove is as good as advertised and he makes some strides with the bat, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them make room for him somehow.

If memory serves, isn't this the issue with Morel? I don't recall him hitting >.300, and even in low A ball, though I could be mistaken.

He hit .297 in 172 A-ball AB's. He hasn't shown much power, however.

Buddy Bell loves his glove. That was the first thing that came out of his mouth after he was drafted.

At high-A Winston-Salem this year, Morel led the team in RBIs with 79 and hit 16 HRs, which tied him for the team lead, while batting .281. He also led the team in both doubles (33) and stolen bases (25). And only made 11 errors all year.

I would say he is progressing just fine and as well as can be expected. He needs to make the jump to Birmingham next year.

That's what I recall about Morel, too.

But, IF he's not a slugger at a slugger's position, if/when he makes it to Chicago, the lineup would need more production at another position. [i.e. Catcher, 2B, etc..]

Now, if Beckham [eventually] moves to a middle infield position, Morel @ 3B may make more sense for the lineup. [Yes, we already know that the immediate future for Beckham is @ 3B, but you never know in a few years.]

OK, but won't his .281 @ High-A translate into a ~.270 @ AA, ~.260 @ AAA, and ~.240 in MLB under Walker?

This doesn't make me as optimistic as oeo's post...

So Morel has peaked? A player can improve on things believe it or not.

Not to say that Morel necessarily will, but to condemn a player as a .240 hitter in the bigs (if he even makes it there) because he hit .281 in High A is rather shortsighted.

Using A+ statistics to project major league performance isn't a good idea. Batting lines become more credible/projectible as players rise, and improvement is what's most important at the lower levels.

I'm speaking more to the reality that the degree of difficulty rises as a player moves through the minor leagues. Morel will face better breaking balls, fastballs with more movement, and opposing pitchers with higher baseball IQs in AA than he did in A or A+. I'm hopeful that his results will not suffer as a result. But hitting .281 in A+ isn't exactly legendary, is it?

If memory serves, the previous 3B "prospect" Josh Fields didn't hit for a high average, and struck out a ton as he was sent through the then-craptacular SOX minor league system. When Fields arrived in Chicago, his batting average didn't exactly skyrocket.

I'm not suggesting that this will happen to Morel. I suppose I'm merely adverse to seeing Morel [a player who I believe in, BTW] become a low-average, under-powered player at his position in the Bigs.

We're all adverse to that. But if Morel hit for .250 - .260 and played great defense, I'd welcome him to this team with open arms. We need better infield defense -- who am I kidding? We need better defense all around the diamond.
