I have wondered the same thing as to why he has not yet moved up. Hudson and Carter seemed to be similar in potential and records. Both came off the same college team, Old Dominion, both had very good years at Great Falls last year, and both started this season at Kannapolis. But it is Hudson who has quickly jumped to high-A and AA while Carter has been left behind.

My guess is that Carter still needs to develop some secondary pitches. He seems to get hit even though he can throw in the mid-90s. Last night, though he struck out 14 and having a great night, he gave up 4 earned runs.

Here's an interesting article about him from last year that may shed a little light on his ability.

Might have something to do with him working with Owens vs Thigpen? Who knows? Could be that they just don't have an opening in the rotation in WS and don't have anyone there who they want to push up?

I'm generally OK with holding guys back rather than forcing someone up a level.

That was an interesting find. I think the writer's take on Carter and Hudson is the same thing we've been talking about. He wrote:

Yeah, the Sox seem notorious for just rushing some guys up as soon as they see some progress. Maybe with Carter, in taking some time, they are really doing the right thing for him. He has a lot of ability. They need to make him more effective as a pitcher.

Interesting also the note about the disastrous acquisition Jeff Marquez. And right below Marquez in the not-so-hot sheet is former Sox farmhand Dan Cortes.
