Sox sign a couple top draft picks

I'm guessing you meant our 46th round pick, Lee Fischer. He's a shortstop out of the University of Missouri... played in JUCO two years ago, was an All-American and defensive player of the year. And from all I read, that defensive prowess is the only skill he was known for at Mizzou.

It doesn't make sense that he's being placed so high, especially considering he's the seventh SS we've drafted. I'd expect Fischer to end up being a backup in rookie ball... and a guy like Tyler Kuhn to end up playing at A.

If anyone has more info on the situation, I'd be interested.

A) Kannapolis the Low-A ball affiliate of the Sox, so it's not like he's making a huge leap.

B) The Intimidators probably already have a regular shortstop so the Sox are sending Fischer there to back him up, but are planning on giving more promising prospects regular playing time in Rookie ball.

C) The last time the Sox had a late-round draft pick zoom through the minors, he turned out to be this guy:



That seemed to work out pretty well.

Also, has anyone besides people on this site talked about moving Fields to first. I know he has become everyone's favorite to move over there (basically Jermaine Dye 2), but I haven't heard one thing from the Sox to show they are even considering it. As far as I know he has played more SS then 1b in the minors.

Illinois State catcher and Downer's Grove native Kevin Dubler has signed. He's at Bristol.

Now we're really only waiting on JorDanks and Beckham, unless one of the high school guys we took a flyer on signs, but I think that's unlikely.

I'm not holding my breath on Beckham or Danks to sign until the last minute--August 15.

Last year's top 10 picks--the majority of college players didn't sign until the last second.
