''I'd rather not discuss anything in regard to the trade market or potential guys we're looking at,'' said Williams, whose aggressive efforts to obtain Freddy Garcia fell through when Seattle stopped shopping the lefty.

Now that I've talked myself off the ledge...
I'm calm and rational about this now. Fredy Garcia is a great addition. The Sox have the best rotation in the division and are favorites to win the Central this year. For this I am grateful and joyous. However, I believe KW overpaid. First, Garcia's low ERA is in part a function of the fact that he pitches in the cavernous Safeco Field. His ERA has nothing to do with the run support he has received. I don't care much about his W-L record; as other have pointed out it's not significant because he has played on a bad Seattle team. But now, approximately half of his starts will be in the the homer-happy Cell. His ERA could balloon. I just hope his relationship with Ozzie mitigates this factor. Second, while Olivo may only have been playing 40% of the Sox games, he still was the Sox catcher of the present and the future. He could be the next Karkovice (at absolute worst), or perhaps the next Jason Kendall (at the very best). But even at worst, Karkovice was the Sox catcher during the early-90s run. He wasn't an All-Star, but he was a mainstay on some very good teams. Third, Reed projects as a very good #2 hitter and left fielder. Yes, its potential, but the best MLB teams build a foundation through developing their own talent, and then add on through trades and key signings. To sum up: I'm really happy that the Sox rotation has been solidified tremendously. Furthermore, I'm going to wait and see just what KW has up his sleeve for more deals for more pitching, a catcher a some left-handed pop. I just think that KW overpaid to get this deal done. Maybe this deal is what the market really was. But something tells me that in his desire to "make a splash," Kenny was fleeced by the Mariners. I really hope I am wrong and that we'll all be popping champaign corks this October. If that happens, I gladly will apologize for my erroneous and premature analysis.

But though FRATER laughed openly, he wept secretly; and really he neither laughed nor wept. Nor did he mean what he said. |
