Post RIP Gus Triandos

Fellow Greek-American and Oriole catcher with a nickname of Gus Tremendous died yesterday at age 82. Big favorite of Oriole fans in the late 50's and early 60's. IIRC he was the first catcher to use the oversized catchers mitt which Paul Richards came up with to help the catchers with Hoyt Wilhelm's knuckleball. If he wasn't the first then it would have been Clint Courtney who was the backup catcher.

Coming up to bat for our White Sox is the Mighty Mite, Nelson Fox.

Apparently a real nice guy and a fan favorite in Baltimore. His forte was strong defense, he threw out almost 67% of runners attempting to steal in 1957. It was a nightmare trying to catch Wilhelm's knuckleball. IMHO Wilhelm had the wickedest knuckleball of all time, but Triandos battled it with that oversized glove. Slowly but surely the boys of the summers of my youth leave the scene.

Whoa. I thought he was already dead.

He was notoriously slow. He made only one stolen base attempt in his career and made it because the Yankees didn't attempt a throw.

He's also the first to catch no-hitters in both leagues-Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter vs. the Yankees in 1958, and Jim Bunning's perfect game against the Mets in 1964.

From what I remember, Triandos couldn't sleep the night before any of Wilhelm's starts.

He was arguably the best St. Louis Brown/ Baltimore Oriole catcher of alltime. Although Hank Severeid, Rick Dempsey and Matt Weiters are right with him. I always heard good stories about him. RIP.
