So either he must have got some assurances about a possible Phillies call-up, or some assurances of not being a contender for a Cubs position. I know he was drafted by Philly, but to take the same position somewhere else after saying he wanted to manage in the bigs? There has to be something else that Philly is promising him. Funny that he wasn't willing to wait a couple more years in the Cubs farm system.

Red Sox were talking to him about Pawtucket but Francona isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

It makes me wonder if the reason why Ryne left was because of the circus that him being with in the orgainization was causing. Almost from day 1 this past baseball season he was constatly being asked are you going to be the next manager. Then when the job opened he was linked numerous times to the position. Even after not getting it, if he stayed in the organization he would be looked at as the perrenial backup to the head coach should he faulter. This would not only affect him but the team he coaches as well not knowing whether the person will be there from week to week. Even after all the assurance he could give the players there would always be doubt.

Why didn't he stay in Iowa then? What would make you take a lateral move when you were succeeding in your current position? Especially when your goal is to manage in the bigs and that was your sole focus? Something has to be cooking there in Philly.

It's a law of business that once you've been passed over the odds of you getting the job you want go down precipitously because for Top Management to pick you later on, they would have to admit they were wrong in the first place. And Top Management doesn't like to admit it was wrong, ever.
