The White Sox stand to gain as many as 5 additional picks throughout the 1st, Supplemental, and 2nd round depending on free agent compensation. This is all dependent on PK, AJ, and Putz declining arbitration if offered, and then signing elsewhere.
PK and AJ are both Type A free agents at the moment. The declining of arbitration if offered will result in the eventual signing team forfeiting 2 picks to the White Sox. If the signing team is outside the first 18 picks, the White Sox gain their 1st round pick, as well as a Supplemental pick. If the signing team's 1st round pick is within the first 18, the White Sox gain that team's 2nd round pick in addition to a Supplemental pick. Putz is at the moment a Type B free agent. The declining of arbitration if offered will result in White Sox gaining a Supplemental pick if he signs elsewhere. The signing team does not lose a selection. Offseason deadlines have been moved up this year: - The deadline to offer arbitration is now November 23rd. - The deadline to accept or decline arbitration is November 30th. I wouldn't offer AJ arbitration, would you?
There is no way anyone will offer him 7 million per year. He'd be crazy not to accept. Also, what are the early rumblings, if any, as far as draft depth is concerned for 2011?

I think it can go either way for AJ. He probably wants a multi-year deal and could get one with the weak catching market. Lip was mentioning how much of a mess AJ was earlier this year worrying about free agency. He might want nothing to do with a one year deal and opt for security elsewhere. The only reason I think the Sox wouldn't offer arbitration is if the amount he will likely be awarded will absolutely hamstring payroll, which is always a possibility.
PK and Putz will be offered arbitration without question though. As far as the 2011 draft class, it is loaded. Both 2009 and 2010 were weak in comparison. It would very nice to have extra picks this coming year. Though with the Sox track record, they won't be splurging on extra picks. Cheap is par for the course. |

I see both sides of the argument for AJ, but I would personally offer him arbitration. I think the upside of two high draft picks is worth the risk of paying AJ $7M on a one-year deal.

Agreed. I still think Flowers may one day be a serviceable MLB catcher (IMO, his struggles really happened after taking advice from Walker ~ 1 month into the season). I wouldn't necessarily be really comfortable with him handling the duties next year, though. I'd love to see AJ here and have his mind settled.

These are my thoughts as well. The Sox desperately need to improve the farm to better situate themselves for sustained success. The farm is bottom 3 in all baseball right now. The possibility of having 6 picks in the first 3 rounds (1, S, 2) is very nice in what looks like a deep draft class. The Sox need to take advantage and actually spend if this situation comes to fruition.

Goodbye 1st round pick, it was nice knowing you. Can't say I mind in this case though.
Nationals receive the 23rd pick in the draft for the White Sox signing Adam Dunn. |

BenBadler Ben Badler White Sox are giving up the 23rd pick in the 2011 draft to sign Adam Dunn. A hit for an already thin farm system 37 seconds ago |

The Sox gain a supplemental pick for the Diamondbacks signing JJ Putz. The supplemental round is between the 1st and 2nd round. I will update the draft order of said round once more signings occur.

Draft order is updated. Still subject to change as there are still Type A's and B's on the market.
The White Sox first pick in the draft is at #45 in the supplemental round. |
