Sale didn't get as much work in his last start as the White Sox were looking for. He had a three-week layoff while on the DL. Revising the rotation to accommodate the needs of the ace with rain and off days minimizing work isn't that unusual, although it does feel a bit old school.
Not playing in an NL park may have helped the decision, although there are aces on NL teams enjoy hitting and don't present automatic outs. Two first-place teams in the NL have used their ace starters as pinch-hitters this season, despite the risk of injury that hitting and running the bases seems to present.
