This deal makes sense only because Ilitch is what? In his 80s? He's willing to spend anything to win a World Series before he dies and for the first couple years of this contract Cabrera will still be productive. As he gets older and starts breaking down, Ilitch probably won't be around anymore and won't be paying for a broken down Cabrera and maybe Verlander.
According to the original MLB article on this, the Tigers only have 4 players locked up past 2015 - Cabrera, Verlander, Sanchez, and Kinsler, I think. Given that, it seems like Detroit's best chance to win a World Series is either this year or next, and Cabrera would have been in Detroit for 2014 and 2015 regardless. None of those 4 guys are going to be worth much to a team in major flux and possibly requiring a major rebuild after 2015. Perhaps then Ilitch will just go out and spend a bunch more money to field a team. As a Sox fan, I hope he does and that such expenditures hamper Detroit for years to come.
