This deal makes sense only because Ilitch is what? In his 80s? He's willing to spend anything to win a World Series before he dies and for the first couple years of this contract Cabrera will still be productive. As he gets older and starts breaking down, Ilitch probably won't be around anymore and won't be paying for a broken down Cabrera and maybe Verlander.
It makes sense to extend him to an absurd long term deal to help in the short term? Um, okay.
