If that didn't kill Chapman, I don't know what it's going to take; he throws as hard as anyone in the game and that ball was lined straight back at his face. He didn't even lose consciousness.
There is little you can do, I imagine, to prevent something like this, short of putting a BP-style cage in front of the pitcher. It's part of the risk of baseball.
