Konerko will turn 45 in 2021. He can start drawing his MLB pension at 45, as I understand it. It looks like what he did was sign a financially sensible contract if he wants to retire to his home in Scottsdale.
I expect that on the field, especially knowing it's his last season, he will have a better season than 2013. He was having an outstanding 2012 before the injuries and he seemed to be playing hurt most of last season. He is a smart hitter, and I don't know that he would want to come back if he didn't feel he couldn't do it physically after 2013.
