Because if it's obvious he isn't going to be with the team in 2015, why keep him in 14? If they have an idea who they want in charge during the rebuild, why wait a year.
Also, if Thome becomes manager at any point in the next 3 years, it's clear ownership is not that concerned with actually making the team competitive.
