It's not like that was a huge drop off, he went 2 and 10 with an ERA of 5.41 with the Red Sox the year before. Marcum was as good or better than Rhodes ever was. Savino was a career minor league journeyman who never made the majors and didn't even reach AAA until age 36, some ten years later.

That was more Connie Mack dumping salarys because he was broke on why Foxx got traded.
