In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Minnesota Twins
at Comiskey Park

The White Sox came out for a Sunday doubleheader hoping to put a little distance between themselves and the Twins, who were hoping to take two and regain the top spot. A crowd of 33,898 turned out and was so raucous and loud that the old south side ballyard was practically shaken to the rafters. In the process the delirious fans brought about the one thing that everybody remembers most about the South Side Hitmen-the curtain...

July 2,1977
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Comiskey Park

First place showdown, day 2. The Twins took the field that day looking to take the top spot back from the White Sox. Once again, they would have no idea what hit them.

It was a hot, sunny July day and Harry Caray was in the centerfield bleachers calling the action when the Sox trotted out onto the field for the start of the game.

The Twins once again struck first, getting two runs off Sox starter...

July 1,1977
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Comiskey Park

The Twins came to the south side for a 1st place showdown with the White Sox, who were trailing them by only a game. It turned out to be a weekend like no other in team history. The outpouring of emotion from the fans was on a level not seen since the Glory Days of the pennant-winning Go Go Sox of 1959. Not even Stanky's Boys of 1967 or Chuck's Charges in 1972 generated this type of fan reaction. This is the weekend...

vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

The Sox beat Oakland 3 of 4 and take 2 of 3 from the Angels, to whom the Sox had traded the unsigned Ken Brett on June 15, in exchange for three pitchers and a substantial sum said to be in the six figures.

The move angered Sox players who were fond of Brett, one of the most outgoing, swinging guys in the clubhouse. Bart Johnson said that it could only mean that it meant the Sox were playing for...

June 19,1977
vs. Oakland A's
at Comiskey Park

Say! Remember the Oakland A's? You know, the team Dave Condon campaigned to have moved to Chicago for 1976? The "champions with mustaches" that Rick Talley sneered at Sox fans for not wanting to move to the south side to replace the Seattle-bound White Sox, who had been there for 75 years? They came to town Father's Day weekend with a record of 28-31, down in 6th place, ahead of only the expansion Seattle Mariners....
