In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

August 21,1973
vs. Cleveland Indians
at Cleveland Municipal Stadium

Stan Bahnsen stood on the mound, nervously toeing the rubber. The crowd of 13,728 was cheering for him, despite the fact that the game was in Cleveland. There were two out in the bottom of the 9th and the sagging Sox, 58-66 at this point, were winning 4-0. This was no ordinary shutout, however. Stan had not surrendered a hit to the Indians all night. His ex-teammate Walt Williams stepped into the batter's...

August 11,1973
vs. Detroit Tigers
at Tiger Stadium

The Sox limp into August at 52-53 and get more bad news. Dick Allen played in two more games but was limping and in pain. An attempt by Allen to take batting practice on the 3rd ended with him hurting. Tanner finally told him to stay off the leg until it was better, no matter how long it took, saying there was no use jeopardizing his career to rush him back. Ken Henderson had his ongoing knee issues as well. The possibility...

July 31,1973
vs. Kansas City Royals
at White Sox Park

Two players returned to White Sox Park on this night, to very different receptions. The outcome of the game told the story of the season.

Dick Allen was in the lineup for the first time since Mike Epstein had barreled into him on that fateful night in Anaheim. Allen got a warm reception from the crowd when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 1st and rapped a basehit.

By this time the...

July 29,1973
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

On the same day that Stu Holcomb parted ways with the team, the Sox went out and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Royals in Kansas City. Steve Stone had pitched a brilliant 7.1 innings of shutout ball, but Terry Forster couldn't hold a 1-0 lead in the 9th; the Royals tied it and won in the 10th. The loss put the Sox at 50-51, the first time they were below .500 since they had been 3-4 in early April.

July 27, 1973

The first rumblings of potential regime change came in a July 25 Tribune story headlined "Holcomb to give up Sox post?"

Two days later the rumor was proven true when it was announced that Stu Holcomb, General Manager of the team since 1970, had submitted a letter of resignation to team owner John Allyn.

One day later Holcomb met with Tribune columnist David Condon for breakfast and revealed the reasons behind his departure. It was,...
