In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

Game of the Year 1972

Game of the Year 1972
August 12 vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

In the beginning, there was the trade.

On December 2, 1971 Roland Hemond went into the trade market seeking another bat for the line up. At the recommendation of manager Tanner, Hemond went after Dick Allen of the Dodgers, eventually landing him in exchange for lefty Tommy John.

Allen had been a rebellious player and contentious presence in Philadelphia, where...

Game of the Year 1971

Game of the Year 1971
April 9 vs. Minnesota Twins
at White Sox Park

How bad were the 1970 White Sox? Try this. Their radio station, WMAQ-AM. did not want them back after four years of falling ratings. Neither did any other station in town. The only stations that would take them were two low wattage stations, WTAQ in LaGrange and WEAW in Evanston.

Newbies Chuck Tanner and Roland Hemond knew they had a near-impossible mission ahead of them for 1971. They went...

Game of the Year 1970
May 31 vs. Boston Red Sox
at Fenway Park

In Catholic Church tradition, St. Jude the Apostle (not to be confused with Judas Iscariot) is the Patron Saint of Hopeless Causes. If you are ever in a situation where the odds are overwhelmingly against you and there is no hope at all of coming through, offer a prayer to St. Jude the Apostle and he will intervene with the Almighty or His Son on your behalf.

St. Jude must've been quite busy in...

Game of the Year 1969

Posted 01-14-2017 at 10:38 AM by TommyJohn (No!!Mary!!!)

Game of the Year 1969
June 19 vs. Seattle Pilots
at White Sox Park

Both baseball and the White Sox effected wholesale changes for 1969.

Baseball responded to the vaunted "Year of the Pitcher" (only one AL batter, Carl Yastrzemski, batted over .300 in 1968) by lowering the mound to give hitters a better chance. They expanded by four teams (two apiece in each league) and divided into four divisions. Teams would now have to play a League Championship...

Game of the Year 1968

Game of the Year, 1968
July 31 vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

I had a tough time picking the game of the year for the year I came into being, 1968. Not because there were so many to choose from, but because when you follow up on a near-pennant year with a 65-97 record, there really aren't very many games that you could say were stand outs, or that defined a season, except maybe the losing ones.

The White Sox decided they needed hitting and more...
