In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

Great to see the Sox recover from that beating yesterday to take one back.

Meanwhile, in APBALand, the 1936 Sox improved to 7-4 by beating the Boston Red Sox 9-6. Ted Lyons was the winner over Lefty Grove in a duel of Hall-of-Famers. The Sox coasted through the first 8.5 innings, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Mike Kreevich contributed with a bases loaded triple early. In the 9th he followed up a Rip Radcliffe two-run homer with a solo shot.

Things got dicey in the 9th when...

I more or less use a set lineup for the games:

Rip Radcliff, LF
Mike Kreevich, CF
Dixie Walker, RF
Zeke Bonura, 1B
Luke Appling, SS
Jackie Hayes, 2B
Jimmie Dykes, 3B
Luke Sewell, C

My pitching rotation isn't exactly a bunch of worldbeaters. In order to keep track of the rotation, I am simply using the starters of the real games, as gleaned from retrosheet. So far it has been mostly John Whitehead and Monty Stratton, who was two...

So far my APBA record with the 1936 White Sox is 6-4. The real-life 1936 squad was 4-6 at the same point, in the midst of an eight-game losing streak that would drop them to 4-9. Still, they would bounce back to finish at 81-70 and see the light of the first division for the first time since the 1920 doomed-by-scandal squad.

The games I have played are fun, despite the fact that they are cards and dice, not real games. Cards and dice don't take into account the human element-brushback...

I ordered 1936 and got it in the mail a couple of weeks ago. I printed up the White Sox games from that year. My head was swimming with the possibilities. First off, I would play the games in exact order of the retrosheet list. However, I would introduce interleague play-just to break up the monotony-and also to utilize every team in the set. I will play every team in the NL at least three times except for the Cubs. Why? Because the 1930's was the era of the "City Series" between the White...

I have, in my 40th year, discovered the wonders of "APBA" baseball, the kind played with playing cards and rolls of the dice. I had a similar game made by Sports Illustrated from 1970, but never got into APBA. Don't know why, guess I never botherd to look for it.

I had been on whatifsports.com for a while, but grew bored with computer simulations. Not only did it not account for the "human" element of the game, but it was over in two seconds. So I quit going there...
