September 7, 1972
vs. Oakland A's
at White Sox Park

For six heady days in late August, the White Sox hold on to 1st place by a slim margin. Fans start to hope against hope for a "Miracle on 35th Street" in which the underdog White Sox would hold off the A's and take the AL West.

A Luis Tiant shutout in Fenway Park on the 29th knocks the Sox out of 1st. It is the start of a 1-6 slide that pushes them 3 1/2 back.

Oakland comes to town on...

August 23,1972
vs. New York Yankees
at White Sox Park

Dick Allen always seemed to do things with flair; or "panache" as Edmond Rostand's tragic hero Cyrano DeBergerac called it. His first White Sox (and American League) hit was a home run in the top of the 9th to break a scoreless tie. His second home run in White Sox Park (and only his third of the season) was game-ender in the bottom of the 9th. Called upon to pinch-hit for the first time that season (after being...

August 20,1972
vs. Boston Red Sox
at White Sox Park

The Sox stay white hot following the A's series. After the final game loss on the 13th, they go on a four game winning streak, taking two each from Milwaukee and Boston. Luis Tiant snaps the streak with a shutout on the 19th, but the White Sox head into a Sunday DH with Boston a mere 1/2 game behind the A's.

Wilbur Wood took the mound questing for his 22nd win, which would equal his win output for 1971. ...

August 10 & 11,1972
vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

By now the White Sox were the surprise of baseball. Their hot pursuit of the Oakland A's astounded many observers. It wasn't supposed to be this way. Oakland was supposed to win the AL West going away, as they had done last year. The other teams were, at best, going to offer only token opposition.

By mid-July, the A's appeared ready to pull away from the pack. On July 18 the upstart...

July 31,1972
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

When fans reminisce about Dick Allen, it usually has to do with the home runs he hit. Allen swaggering up to the plate with his large 42 ounce bat. Digging in, facing down some poor, hapless pitcher. A swing sweet enough to inspire baseball poets to search for metaphors to describe it. The thunderous sound of bat meeting ball. The beautiful, majestic arc as said ball took off for parts unknown, hanging in the air for...
