July 3 & 4,1971

at Municipal Stadium, Kansas City

The White Sox play like a team on fire after their 18-8 thrashing of the Twins. That win kicked off a 6 game winning streak, followed by 4 losses to the Angels. But no matter. The promptly go out and win 6 straight again to go 12-4 in the 16 games since dropping to 22-38.

The last two of these wins are back-to-back 1-0 complete game shutouts over the Royals during 4th of July weekend.

Tommy John is the author of the first one, scattering 6 hits and striking out 6 en route to the win. Rich McKinney's RBI triple in the top of the 8th gives John his one run. The lefty improves his record to 6-9 and lowers his ERA to 3.48.

The next day Wilbur Wood, who is having a fine season as a regular starter, helps celebrate Independence Day along with Chuck Tanner's birthday by getting the second straight shutout. Wood gives up four hits and ups his record to 8-4. His ERA is a classy 1.77.

Wood got the only run he needed in the 4th on three consecutive hits-a double by Bill Melton and singles by Rick Reichardt and Carlos May, the second of which scored Melty.
