In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

September 2 & 3, 1968
vs. Washington Senators
at. D.C. Stadium

At first glance, these two games with the Senators, both of which the Sox lost, seem like garden variety 1968 games. In the first one, they were blown out 11-3. In the second, Cisco Carlos did not get any run support in a 2-1 loss.

What made these losses big was that they were the team's 81st and 82nd losses of the season, thus ensuring that they would finish below .500 for the first time since 1950.

The White Sox had taken Chicago and the baseball world by storm when the legendary "Go Go Sox" shot out of the gate in 1951 and were in first place for a while. The team ran out of gas and finished 81-73. It was the beginning of a run of 17 straight winning seasons, a streak topped by only two other teams-the Yankees and Orioles. Included in the streak was the pennant year of 1959, three straight seasons of 90 wins or more only to finish in 2nd place and the pennant race of 1967.

All of that came to an end on these dates with nary a whimper.
