vs. Texas Rangers
at Comiskey Park

The Sox celebrated the Bicentennial with a Sunday doubleheader against the Rangers.

Rookie Francisco Barrios got the starting assignment for game one, which ended up being a thriller.

The Sox struck first with three runs in the bottom of the 2nd, but Texas came right back with two in the next inning. The Sox added to their lead with one in the 4th, but Texas took the lead with three unearned...

vs. Texas Rangers
at Comiskey Park

Morning games were an occasional occurrence during the dead ball era, when lights for night games didn't exist. They were usually played as one half of a doubleheader, with one game in the morning and one game in the afternoon. The Red Sox still play a morning game on Patriots Day in Massachusetts, which is also the day of the Boston Marathon.

Comiskey Park had never seen any morning games until this Saturday...

vs. Texas Rangers
at Arlington Stadium

The White Sox always had a collection of "hard luck" pitchers-hurlers who go out to the mound and give up, say, 1 run on three hits only to walk off the field a 1-0 loser. Billy Pierce was the "hard luck" guy in the 1950s, always seeming to come out on the losing end of a 1-0 score. The 1960s saw Joel Horlen and Gary Peters constantly giving up one run and getting either a loss or a no-decision....

June 22,1976
vs. Kansas City Royals
at Royals Stadium

The White Sox went to KC to meet up with the first place Royals, who were threatening to dethrone five-time AL West champ Oakland, who was lagging 9 1/2 games behind. The Sox mercifully put their 10 game losing streak to a stop with a 11 inning, 2-1 win on the 21st.

The next night Jesse Jefferson took the mound for a rare start, carrying a line of 1-2 and an ERA of 6.83. His mound opponent was Steve...

June 20,1976
vs. New York Yankees
at Comiskey Park

The last-minute loss to the Indians on the 11th seemed to do something to the White Sox. They dropped the next three to Cleveland, two to Baltimore and three to the Yankees to make it nine straight losses going into this game.

It was Bat Day at Comiskey Park, one of the team's most popular promotions. Sure enough, the largest crowd of the season, 40,898, turned out on a nice Sunday afternoon to watch the...
