In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

April 24,1973
vs. New York Yankees
at Yankee Stadium

The Sox follow up their split with the A's by getting pounded in three straight by the Royals, twice by scores of 12-5. The good news is that in the second 12-5 whomping Bill Melton hit his 1st home run since coming back from his crippling back injury. Tanner was quoted as saying that it was important that Bill "get that first one."

The bad news is that it dropped the team to 2-4 and ballooned the team's ERA up past 8. Richard Dozer wrote in the Tribune of Sox fans already starting to fret and panic over what was wrong, though the team is remaining calm.

The calmness pays off, as a 10-5 slapping of the Rangers kicks off a 4 game winning streak that is snapped by Kansas City.

The next day the Sox take the field against the Yanks in New York, with Stan Bahnsen going against Fritz Peterson.

The Sox unload on Peterson, touching him for two home runs, the first one a dink by Eddie Leon into the short right field porch 325 feet away, which would have been a routine out in Sox Park. Instead it's Leon's first home run of the year. The other is by Bill Melton, his 5th of the year. Carlos May adds a homer in the 7th off reliever Fred Beene.

Bahnsen, who at this point is still unsigned, goes the distance, although it's hardly a masterpiece. He allows 4 runs, 11 hits, 3 walks and had to pitch his way out of several jams. More performances like this one will inspire Sox fans to dub Bahnsen with the unflattering nickname "Stanley Struggle."

Yankee manager Ralph Houk, who actually was Bahnsen's first big league manager, also wasn't a fan. After seeing his former pitcher during spring training he asked Sox officials "how did that guy manage to win 21 games last year? It's amazing to me."

Sox take this one 8-4 and are 1 1/2 games out of 1st.
