vs. Texas Rangers
at Comiskey Park

The Sox end April on a losing note, a 14-4 crushing at the hands of the Rangers in the second of a three game set at Comiskey. It is the team's third loss in a row and puts them at 10-8, in 4th place but only one game out of 1st.

One highlight of the game came in the 8th inning, when Wilbur Wood entered the game in relief. Wilbur, who hadn't played since getting his kneecap shattered on the previous May...

vs. Detroit Tigers
at Tiger Stadium

April 7,1977
vs. Toronto Blue Jays
at Exhibition Stadium

Pessimism was the prevailing emotion as the Sox broke camp ready for the season. The Chicago writers were unanimous in agreement that the Sox would not be serious contenders. Robert Markus and Rick Talley even picked them to finish 7th and last, behind the expansion Seattle Mariners, who had yet to play a single game.

Bill Gleason, one of the few sportswriters in the city who actually cared...

1976 Offseason

Posted 04-20-2018 at 07:25 PM by TommyJohn (No!!Mary!!!)

Unable to land any blue chips from the first baseball free agent class of 1976, Veeck decided to turn his attentions to another free agent class-that of 1977.

He decided on a strategy he called "Rent-a-player." If he couldn't sign a top player to a megabucks contract, he would trade for a player entering the last year of his contract, get a financially motivated performance out of him and hopefully convince said player to stay.

Veeck set his plan in motion...
