July 7,1974
vs. Detroit Tigers
at Tiger Stadium

Bart Johnson seemed ticketed for superstardom following his 1971 season, in which he went 12-10 with a 2.98 ERA. In those 12 wins were two games with 12 strikeouts. He possessed a blazing fastball that earned him the nickname Mr. Smoke. He also possessed a "red ass" and had a penchant for getting deep under the skin of his opponents, having precipitated three bench-clearing dust ups that season.

Things...

July 1,1974
vs. Kansas City Royals
at White Sox Park

You would think that, between Opening Day and Seat Cushion Night, all the yahoos making White Sox Park their new home would've gotten all the stupidity out of their system. And you would be wrong.

The game itself was on national television on Monday night, and the Sox responded with one of their worst performances of the season. About 20 or so blockheads did the team no favors with their performance in the...

June 29-30,1974
vs. Minnesota Twins
at White Sox Park

Jorge Orta, the quiet, painfully shy Mexican-born second baseman, was the star of these two games with the Twins.

Orta was beginning to come into his own as a player this season after two seasons of ups and downs, including his first year of 1972, when he had made the club out of spring but was demoted during the season.

June 18,1974
vs. Cleveland Indians
at Municipal Stadium

The offense was in full flower this night in support of Jim Kaat, who had been struggling in the early part of the season. He hadn't won a game since May 5 and was demoted out of the rotation at the beginning of June. To make matters worse, Kaat, along with other Sox pitchers, were the target of barbs from Harry Caray, who didn't hesitate to tell his audience about the Sox' lack of pitching, again and again. The comments...

June 8-9,1974
vs. Boston Red Sox
at White Sox Park

Ron Santo was displeased. If the union between the North Side icon and the South Side team could be likened to a marriage, then Ronnie at this point was sleeping on the couch.

It didn't start out this way. At first all was love and happiness, as is the case with newlywed couples. Ron boasted about the camaraderie of the team, how they made him feel welcome, the leadership of Dick Allen, the managerial skills...
