Offseason

November 25, 1969-New Sox owner John Allyn rejects an offer from Milwaukee Brewers, Inc. to play a slate of games in their city in 1970.

"I don't see any point in continuing to play there" Allyn said. He explained that the point of the games was to prove that the city could support a team. "However, there is nothing more to prove. Milwaukee is not going to get a team."

On the same day, Kansas City Royals outfielder Lou Piniella...

vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

A season of frustration comes to an end on this bright, sunny Thursday afternoon. The opponent is the Minnesota Twins, the newly-crowned American League Western Division champions, whose season will continue later in the week vs. the AL East champ Baltimore Orioles for the right to play in the World Series.

The game is a typical one, insofar as the 1969 Sox go. The team jumps out to a quick 4-1 lead...

September 24, 1969

The White Sox of the late 1960s was a team in turmoil. Fans slogged through the awfulness of the 1968 and 1969 seasons. Meanwhile, Arthur Allyn took a look at his increasingly red ledger sheets and didn't like what he saw.

The team was no longer making money. They couldn't draw people to the park, even when they had been in an exciting pennant chase in 1967. People saw the neighborhood the park was in as scary and dangerous. Trades designed to boost...

vs. Mortar Barrel
at Camp Pendleton, Ca.

Carlos May was, no doubt about it, the find of the year, nay, the decade for the White Sox. The outfielder from Alabama took the South Side by storm in 1969, homering twice on Opening Day, then proceeding to blast AL pitching to pieces. By May 16th, he had 10 home runs. On June 24th, he hit his 15th of the season.

He cooled off a bit, home run-wise, but was, along with...

vs. Kansas City Royals
at White Sox Park

Walt Williams strode to the plate to lead off the bottom of the 7th inning of Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader. The Sox were trailing 5-4 and hoping to get a rally going. On the mound stood well-traveled Moe Drabowsky of the Royals. Moe wound up and fired one plateward. At 3:17PM Walt slapped the pitch into right field for a single.

At that, the centerfield "Monster" scoreboard erupted into fireworks....
