In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

The Sox take the field for the second game of the 1969 season after having lost 5-2 on Opening Day.

Tommy John takes the mound for his first start since issuing the fateful base on balls to Dick McAuliffe the previous August. John had sustained a torn ligament in the brawl, but refused to undergo surgery for it, perhaps fearing that further damage might be done.

Any fears that the injury ruined his arm are quickly dispelled. John goes the distance, scatters four harmless hits and strikes out four in recording a shutout.

The other Sox star of the day is rookie Carlos May, a September call up in 1968. May hits the first two home runs of his career off Oakland starter and loser Jim Nash. He also drives in the only three runs of the game in the 3-0 win.

The Sox have two more stops to make before coming to Chicago for the home opener, where the team and the park will sport a new look.
