Chuck Tanner decided a shake-up was in order. He benched Ron Santo, who was hitting .236 with one AL home run, demoted Jim Kaat, who had lost his last five games (prompting Harry Caray's "maybe it's time to retire" crack) to the bullpen, promoted Skip Pitlock to the rotation and called up Bill Sharp, who was hitting .380, from Iowa.

The stars of this game were two standbys that Tanner needn't do anything...
