In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Milwaukee Brewers
at White Sox Park

You just can't keep a good Bud down.

Allen H. "Bud" Selig, head of Milwaukee Brewers, Inc., was bound and determined to bring major league baseball back to his home city.

Bud and his buds turned their attentions to the Seattle Pilots after John Allyn thwarted his plans to buy the Sox. The Pilots after one year and a 64-98 record were tottering on the brink of financial ruin. Selig met with the Pilots owner and hammered out a tentative deal to buy the club.

After a winter of court actions involving the team and city, the ruling came down on March 31 that the club would not be able to pay its debts and could be sold immediately. The AL had already given approval to move the club should that happen, and so at the end of spring training it was announced that the Seattle Pilots would shift base and become the Milwaukee Brewers. Bud had his team.

On the above date the new Brewers took the field to play the team that had very nearly become them, the White Sox.

A pitifully tiny crowd of 1,036 turned out on a cold (38 degrees) Friday afternoon to see the match up. Gerry Janeski, Boston's compensation for sore-armed Billy Farmer, took the mound for his first major league start.

He went 7.1 innings, giving up three runs and ten hits. Carlos May, Ken Berry, Luis Aparicio and Bobby Knoop chipped in to the cause, Knoop with a home run. Sox edge the brand-new Brewers 5-4.

After the game Janeski summed up his feelings about his major league debut: "I wasn't nervous because the crowd wasn't very big."
