In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

July 19, 1970
vs. Baltimore Orioles
at White Sox Park

The losing continues unabated for our hapless 1970 heroes. The team bags last place on July 7, rises out for a day, then settles in for good on the 10th.

One positive is Carlos May, whose comeback continues to be a success, as he is batting .299. Meanwhile Bill Melton is shifted to the outfield for his own protection.

This day belonged to Luis Aparicio. The star shortstop, by this time in his career a true south side legend, is given his own day. Luis, who is in the AL Top Ten with a .316 average, is in his 10th season with the team, broken up into two separate tours of duty; the first seven years and the second three.

The team presents Aparicio with several gifts, including a camper, boat, sports car, fishing equipment, golf clubs and a stereo. The crowd cheers all through the ceremony, which takes place in between games of a doubleheader. A steady rain falls throughout the ceremony.

As for the games, the Orioles slam the Sox in game 1, handing Joel Horlen his 13th loss. The Sox bounce back in game 2 to win 7-3, with Melton chipping in with his 17th home run of the season. The win snaps a 4 game losing streak.

Luis chips in by going 4-for-9 with 1 RBI on the day.
