May 6,1973
vs. New York Yankees
at White Sox Park

The White Sox continue to play hot. The day after the 6-5 win over Baltimore, Wilbur Wood trots out and throws a shutout-his third in a row. The pitching staff is inspired, as Stan Bahnsen and veteran Eddie Fisher both throw zeroes at the Yankees with relief help from Terry Forster.

The Sox take the field on Sunday afternoon vs. the Yankees having won 8 straight games. Wood goes out in a bid for a 4th straight...

May 1,1973
vs. Baltimore Orioles
at White Sox Park

In earlier entries on Dick Allen, I wrote of how he had flair, panache, a knack for rising to the occasion. I even overdosed on hyperbole by pretty much describing Allen as a cross between John Shaft and Roy Hobbs. That may have overdone it a bit, but the only reason I implied that he was like Shaft and Roy is because, well, he was. April 11 & 12,1973
vs. Oakland A's
at White Sox Park

Somebody up there just seemed to have it in for John Allyn. For the second year in a row, a large Opening Day crowd is expected at White Sox Park. For the second year in a row, the opener is postponed.

In 1972, it was human nature-demanding players + stubborn owners = season delaying strike that cost the Sox an opening day gate of 50,000. In 1973, it was Mother Nature-temperatures in the 30s + wet field...

April 7,1973
vs. Texas Rangers
at Arlington Stadium

For the second year in a row, a White Sox opener is delayed, this time by the elements. Rain dumps down on half the state of Texas, forcing a 24 hour postponement.

The teams take the field the next evening, making this the second straight night opener for both teams. Wilbur Wood takes to the mound to square off against Dick Bosman of the Rangers.

The Sox make it exciting in the 1st, when...

1972 Offseason

Awards galore poured in for the 1972 White Sox, to no one's surprise. After all, to go from the worst team in baseball to the second-best team in the American League in two short years seemed to be nothing short of a miracle.

The Sporting News named Roland Hemond and Chuck Tanner their Executive of the Year and Manager of the Year, respectively.

The "Bible of Baseball" also named Wilbur Wood its AL Pitcher of the Year. Workhorse Wilbur had started 49...
