In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

Games and Moments

June 25,1972
vs. Texas Rangers
at Arlington Stadium

The White Sox get a fairly good idea of what it would be like to play 9 innings in the middle of a blast furnace; and also why the Astros in nearby Houston had ditched Colt Stadium in favor the large, comfy, air conditioned Astrodome.

The thermometer hits 105 degrees on this Sunday afternoon. The White Sox spend the day feeling like they were at a down-home Texas barbecue-on top of the grill. By the 3rd inning they may have been yearning for a nice, icy, lake effect breeze.

Carlos May is once again the hero. The Sox are leading 2-0 in the 4th when they whack Ranger pitching for 7 runs. Dick Allen opens the scoring when he draws a bases-loaded walk. That brings on May, who connects with a Jim Panther pitch and sends it flying into the stands for his 3rd career grand slam.

Mike Andrews and Tom Bradley bolster the lead with RBI hits as well.

On the mound Bradley is on cruise control through 4, but eventually starts to wilt in the oppressive heat and gives up 3 runs in 6 1/3 innings. Vicente Romo and rookie Cy Acosta (the winner of the Dick Allen pinch-hit homer game) tidy up for him.

Sox take this one 10-5 to go to 36-24. They are in holding fast to 2nd place, 4 games behind AL West leading Oakland.
