In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Boston Red Sox
at White Sox Park

Ron Santo was displeased. If the union between the North Side icon and the South Side team could be likened to a marriage, then Ronnie at this point was sleeping on the couch.

It didn't start out this way. At first all was love and happiness, as is the case with newlywed couples. Ron boasted about the camaraderie of the team, how they made him feel welcome, the leadership of Dick Allen, the managerial...

vs. Boston Red Sox
at White Sox Park

Whenever a relief pitcher enters a critical, late inning situation-say, one out, his team up by one run but with the bases loaded and the other team threatening to blow the game open-and gets out of the jam, he is said to have "put out the fire." There was a fire put out in the 8th inning of this game, but the save didn't go to Terry Forster, Rich Gossage or any other member of the Sox bullpen; nor does it appear...

vs. New York Yankees
at White Sox Park

Chuck Tanner decided a shake-up was in order. He benched Ron Santo, who was hitting .236 with one AL home run, demoted Jim Kaat, who had lost his last five games (prompting Harry Caray's "maybe it's time to retire" crack) to the bullpen, promoted Skip Pitlock to the rotation and called up Bill Sharp, who was hitting .380, from Iowa.

The stars of this game were two standbys that Tanner needn't...

vs. Boston Red Sox
at Fenway Park

In 1980, while giving an interview to Tribune writer Bob Vanderberg, then-Pittsburgh Pirates manager Chuck Tanner remembered this game. Sort of...

"I got to the ballpark early" Tanner told Vanderberg. "And Danny Murtaugh, who was scouting for the Pirates, was telling me 'How can you guys be fighting for a pennant? You don't have any speed, the defense is poor.' I said 'Don't tell the ballplayers...

vs. Minnesota Twins
at White Sox Park

The Sox keep winning more than they lose and at one point grab a share of 1st place.

They are 15-14 going into this game against the Twins in front of a small crowd at White Sox Park. "Stanley Struggle" Bahnsen took the mound and pitched one of the best games of his career.

Stan showed absolutely no signs of struggle this night. He finished off the Twins 1-2-3 for seven innings....
