In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

September 11,1972
vs. Kansas City Royals
at Municipal Stadium, Kansas City

Dick Allen continued his assault on American league pitching and the White Sox record book this night, while the Sox continue their drive towards an improbable division title.

Dick, returning to the scene where he kicked off his 1972 campaign with a top of the 9th shot for his first home run of the season, wastes no time tonight. He steps up in the top of the 1st with Mike Andrews aboard and tees off on Royal lefty Paul Splittorff-an Arlington Heights native who had rooted for the Go-Go Sox in his youth-and takes him deep for a two run home run. The shot obliterates Bill Melton's franchise record of 33 home runs in a season.

It is all the offense Tom Bradley needs, as he shuts down the Royal offense for 8 1/3 innings before yielding a home run, then yielding to Terry Forster, who records the last out for the save.

Allen shrugged off the record after the game.

"More important to win" he told the media. He was right about that. The win gave the Sox a record of 77-59; this, combined with Oakland dropping a doubleheader to the Twins, put the Sox only 2 games back of the A's with 18 games left.

Note: I continue to be amazed at the time of games that is recorded in the boxscore. Maybe I am just used to ball games taking 3 to 3 1/2 hours. This one was over in 1 hour and 50 minutes.
