In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

The big question facing the Sox going into 1975 was if they would win without Dick Allen. Richard Dozer thought so-he picked the Sox to finish second. Bob Verdi wasn't as confident, he saw them dropping to fifth.

The Sox took the field for a night opener vs. the Oakland A's. Charlie Finley's team had beaten the Orioles in the 1974 ALCS, then dispatched the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games to win their third consecutive World Series, the only team not named the New York Yankees to win more than two straight World Series. For the White Sox, the dynasty-challenging years of 1972 and early 1973 seemed like a distant memory.

Wilbur Wood hooked up against Vida Blue in this game. The A's struck early when Joe Rudi singled and Billy Williams, playing in his first American league game after being traded by the Cubs, ripped a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Wood got the next two out, only to have rookie 2nd baseman Phil Garner rip a shot off Jorge Orta's glove to score both runs.

The Sox got their first run of the season in the 7th, when Ken Henderson and Bill Melton got on base for Bucky Dent, who singled to drive in Henderson.

They threatened again in the 8th with one out when rookie Nyls Nyman was plunked by a pitch. Jorge Orta rapped a single to left. Nyman hesitated at 2nd and it cost him. He continued to 3rd but was easy pickin's for Sal Bando, who took a perfect throw from Claudell Washington to nail Nyman. Bill Sharp then struck out to end the inning and the rally.

The A's got on the board again in the 8th when Joe Rudi drove Washington home with a double.

The Sox threatened one more time in the 9th. Ken Henderson stroked a 1 out single and scored when Bill Melton belted a double. Bee Bee Richard came on to pinch run. Pat Kelly then singled to centerfield. Bee Bee blazed his way around 3rd attempting to score the tying run. Bill North came up with Kelly's hit and fired a rope to Gene Tenace, who applied the tag. Richard was out. Carlos May then flied out to end the game.
