July 31,1973
vs. Kansas City Royals
at White Sox Park

Two players returned to White Sox Park on this night, to very different receptions. The outcome of the game told the story of the season.

Dick Allen was in the lineup for the first time since Mike Epstein had barreled into him on that fateful night in Anaheim. Allen got a warm reception from the crowd when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 1st and rapped a basehit.

By this time the...

July 29,1973
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

On the same day that Stu Holcomb parted ways with the team, the Sox went out and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Royals in Kansas City. Steve Stone had pitched a brilliant 7.1 innings of shutout ball, but Terry Forster couldn't hold a 1-0 lead in the 9th; the Royals tied it and won in the 10th. The loss put the Sox at 50-51, the first time they were below .500 since they had been 3-4 in early April.

Two...

July 27, 1973

The first rumblings of potential regime change came in a July 25 Tribune story headlined "Holcomb to give up Sox post?"

Two days later the rumor was proven true when it was announced that Stu Holcomb, General Manager of the team since 1970, had submitted a letter of resignation to team owner John Allyn.

One day later Holcomb met with Tribune columnist David Condon for breakfast and revealed the reasons behind his departure. It was,...

July 20,1973
vs. New York Yankees
at Yankee Stadium

Back in the days when baseball players were rough-and-tumble manly men and the saloon girls who serviced them were damn glad of it, back in the times when a catcher blocking the plate could get both of his arms sliced off by the deadly, slashing spikes of Ty Cobb and shout "'Tis but a flesh wound!" pitchers started both games of a doubleheader.

This was a fairly common practice during the deadball...

July 13,1973
vs. Baltimore Orioles
at White Sox Park

For the second time in five games, the White Sox pull off a dramatic 9th inning comeback. The victim this time is Dave McNally of the Orioles, who took a nifty four-hit shutout into the bottom of the 9th.

The Orioles had staked him to a 2-0 lead via a 6th inning sacrifice fly by Paul Blair and an 8th inning RBI double by ex-Sox Tommie Davis, both off Wilbur Wood, who was going for his 17th win of the season....
