May 20, 1973
vs. Minnesota Twins
at White Sox Park

This day went down in team history as the day that the White Sox rolled straight 5's-as in 55,555.

That was the record number of fans that jammed their way into the ballpark for the Sunday Bat Day doubleheader with the Twins. No one has any explanation for the crowd. It was a popular promotion, sure. And it was the second year in a row that it had drawn a crowd of more than 50,000. But there were years that...

vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

The Sox' 9 game streak is snapped by Boston on Monday the 7th. They play the next few games at a .500 clip before heading out to Oakland for a two game hookup with the defending World Series Champions.

The first game sees Ken Holtzman outduel Wilbur Wood 5-1 in a game that lasted a nifty 1 hour, 50 minutes. The second game of the series would go a bit longer than that.

The Sox got down...

May 6,1973
vs. New York Yankees
at White Sox Park

The White Sox continue to play hot. The day after the 6-5 win over Baltimore, Wilbur Wood trots out and throws a shutout-his third in a row. The pitching staff is inspired, as Stan Bahnsen and veteran Eddie Fisher both throw zeroes at the Yankees with relief help from Terry Forster.

The Sox take the field on Sunday afternoon vs. the Yankees having won 8 straight games. Wood goes out in a bid for a 4th straight...

May 1,1973
vs. Baltimore Orioles
at White Sox Park

In earlier entries on Dick Allen, I wrote of how he had flair, panache, a knack for rising to the occasion. I even overdosed on hyperbole by pretty much describing Allen as a cross between John Shaft and Roy Hobbs. That may have overdone it a bit, but the only reason I implied that he was like Shaft and Roy is because, well, he was. On this night Allen once again showed off his knack for rising to a special occasion....

Games and Moments April 24,1973

April 24,1973
vs. New York Yankees
at Yankee Stadium

The Sox follow up their split with the A's by getting pounded in three straight by the Royals, twice by scores of 12-5. The good news is that in the second 12-5 whomping Bill Melton hit his 1st home run since coming back from his crippling back injury. Tanner was quoted as saying that it was important that Bill "get that first one."

The bad news is that it dropped the team to 2-4 and ballooned...
