It's a new season in so many ways. Robin Ventura's arrival will one day be told as an epic tale, but until that happens, here's an abbreviated Song of South Side Spring.

Profound apologies in advance to H. W. Longfellow, though I'm confident that both he and his Hiawatha would have an appreciation for the rhythmic drama we've all endured.

The 1916 Sox were inching ever closer to the goal of an AL pennant. They finished four games off the pace from 1915, but it was good enough for 2nd place, only two games out. Pants Rowland put up with critics in the press and fan corps as the Sox lagged in 6th place at 26-28. After that, they caught fire and went on a hot streak.

The Old Roman effected changes for 1915. He fired manager Nixey Callahan and surprised people by hiring Clarence "Pants" Rowland, a "busher" who had never played a day in the major leagues. Back then, hiring a manager who had never played in the majors was unheard of.

He also improved the team by purchasing one of the best players in baseball, Eddie Collins of the Philadelphia...

Rockin' Robin Returns

Every March, I watch baseball games being played in distant places like Florida and Arizona, knowing that soon baseball will be played on the south side of Chicago. This time of year you will find me feverishly scouring the Internet and newspapers for the latest information on all things White Sox. I recently saw the 2012 Sox Season Schedule advertised in the newspaper and smiled. I send e-mails and text messages to family and friends, and make plans to attend Sox games this coming season.
