Side Effects of Baseball Movies

Posted 04-22-2009 at 03:38 PM by tebman (Try To Hit 'Em Where They Ain't)

While prowling the interwebs for something that I've since forgotten about, I came upon an article by Roger Angell, the baseball writer for The New Yorker. In the July 31, 1989 issue, he wrote "No, But I Saw the Game," a long essay about baseball movies.

His premise was that baseball movies by their nature have to show ongoing excitement, while real baseball is a series of long stretches of tepid activity with occasional bursts of emotional release. Actual baseball doesn't...

Baseball: a needed distraction

I am going through a tough time right now. As many of you may know, from a question that I posed on the message board in Dec/Jan, I have a Bachelors in Accounting. I lost my job because it closed in October of 2008. I was really hoping to find a job soon but that was not the case. I searched and searched to no avail. I pondered graduate school, which is now a reality in the fall. All of these other things were moving forward but things were still really tough on the job front. Failed attempt...

Greatest White Sox team, Part II

So, I sat down to try and measure, statistically, the greatest single-season White Sox team ever. I decided the way to do this was to measure them against the rest of the American League for that particular season. How good were they against the competition? That seemed the fairest way to judge teams across decades, even centuries.

Now, I will admit this system I came up with might be flawed. It is my own system, based on nothing except my idea of how to measure teams. I call this...

Mac gone, Egbert on his way

Posted 04-21-2009 at 04:26 PM by Lundind1

In a season that is assured to provide Sox fans with tons of twists and turns, the Sox make a definative move. With most fans saying, "bout time" or something along those lines, the Sox designated Mike MacDougal for assignment to Charlotte and called up Jack Egbert from the same.

MacDougal, whose ERA ballooned to a whopping 12.46 with 6 ER in 4-1/3 pitched, is going to be running out of options at the Major League level. It might be time for him to start thinking more long...

Theaters and Ballparks

I was talking with a friend recently who doesn't follow baseball but humors me when I wax poetic about the White Sox. In the course of that conversation I referred him to the YouTube videos posted by "brokertothestars" that give a walk-through tour of old Comiskey Park in the last weeks of its life. If you haven't seen them, you should. There have been a couple of threads about these that are fun to read.

What I told my friend is that being at the ballpark is what makes baseball...
