There was news this week of the layoff of 53 more newsroom people at the Tribune, adding to a thread that ruminated on the paper's fate. Another thread discussed Melissa Isaacson's last column in the Tribune. The piece dealt with the firing of Denis Savard, but could easily be read as her own valedictory as her Tribune career ends. I posted in both threads and realized that my musings are better suited to this blog space.

Dying newspapers upset me because I believe in news. "News"...

Some of the characters I created to fill the roster of the New Orleans Knights from 1892-present

Great to see the Sox recover from that beating yesterday to take one back.

Meanwhile, in APBALand, the 1936 Sox improved to 7-4 by beating the Boston Red Sox 9-6. Ted Lyons was the winner over Lefty Grove in a duel of Hall-of-Famers. The Sox coasted through the first 8.5 innings, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Mike Kreevich contributed with a bases loaded triple early. In the 9th he followed up a Rip Radcliffe two-run homer with a solo shot.

Side Effects of Baseball Movies

While prowling the interwebs for something that I've since forgotten about, I came upon an article by Roger Angell, the baseball writer for The New Yorker. In the July 31, 1989 issue, he wrote "No, But I Saw the Game," a long essay about baseball movies.

His premise was that baseball movies by their nature have to show ongoing excitement, while real baseball is a series of long stretches of tepid activity with occasional bursts of emotional release. Actual baseball doesn't...
