Oof.

Some days, you just shouldn't get out of bed.

You know you have to, though, because there is money to be made and bills to be paid. So you get up and slog your way through the day, grousing the whole time that it's going to be lousy.. And usually, it is.

The 1970 White Sox were probably going through the "don't wanna go to work" stage by this...

Chicago Tribune
Sound Off, Sports Fans!
April 11, 1970

"I DON'T like the way some of the broadcasting stations have ignored the White Sox. WGN and WLS did previews on the Cubs for 1970, but not the Sox. Just because the Sox had an off-year last season doesn't mean they should be forgotten. In past years, when the Cubs were in the second division, the stations found air time for them. I don't want to take anything away from the Cubs, but there still are a lot of people...

vs. Milwaukee Brewers
at White Sox Park

You just can't keep a good Bud down.

Allen H. "Bud" Selig, head of Milwaukee Brewers, Inc., was bound and determined to bring major league baseball back to his home city.

Bud and his buds turned their attentions to the Seattle Pilots after John Allyn thwarted his plans to buy the Sox. The Pilots after one year and a 64-98 record were tottering on the...

Games and Moments

April 7, 1970
vs. Minnesota Twins
at White Sox Park

Opening Day. Those two words sound like music to a baseball fan's ears. They roll off the tongue so sweetly, like honey. O-PEN-ING DAY. The sign that spring is here, summer is coming, baseball is back for another year and all is right with the world.

White Sox fans going into the 1970 season didn't really feel all that optimistic. The team was pretty much the same as the previous...

Games and Moments

Offseason, Part II

Walt Williams, the hustling Sox star of 1969 and the only player on both Chicago teams to hit over .300 (.304) that season, has a conversation with Jerome Holtzman of the Sun-Times. The writer asks Williams how much he is making. Williams tells him and Holtzman thinks he is kidding. He tells the outfielder to ask for as much as other .300 hitters are getting.

Williams, who made $12,000 in 1969, rejects the Sox offer of $14,000...
