May 17-18,1976
vs. California Angels
at Comiskey Park

Two names from earlier in the decade starred in the games played in Comiskey on back-to-back nights-one no longer with the Sox, the other trying to come back from injury.

The big story with the first game was Bill Melton's return. The former Sox 3rd baseman and franchise home run king would be making his first visit back to the south side since the trade that sent him to the Angels.

Bill...

May 9,1976
vs. Detroit Tigers
at Tiger Stadium

The Sox head into May with an unspectacular 5-7 record. The team opened the month on the receiving end of a 10-1 thrashing at the hands of the Tigers.

The evening began on a somber note, as the White Sox retired uniform number 2 in honor of 2nd baseman Nellie Fox, who had died of cancer the previous December 1 at the too young age of 47. Bob Elson emceed the event and Billy Pierce, Fox's best friend and roommate...

April 28,1976
vs. Milwaukee Brewers
at Comiskey Park

The Sox found themselves having to postpone a few games in April, due to the cold. The second game of the season was one of them, as was a game scheduled for Tuesday night the 27th vs. the Brewers. That game was moved to Wednesday afternoon while a game scheduled for Thursday night was switched to the day time as well.

"We inherited this schedule" Bill Veeck said. He explained that the 1976...

April 18,1976
vs. Boston Red Sox
at Fenway Park

Wilbur Wood got 1976 off to a good start, blanking the Royals 4-0 on Opening Day. His next start against Minnesota on the 14th was one of the most unusual games he ever pitched. He was on the losing side of a 6-2 Twins win, having given up all six runs. However, thanks to White Sox fielding misadventures-they committed five errors-all six runs were unearned. Wood ended the day with his ERA for the season still at 0.00.

April 13,1976
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

Opening Day on April 9 at Comiskey Park was a lovefest all around. 40,318 turned out to greet Veeck as a returning hero. One highlight was a pregame ceremony in which Veeck, Paul Richards and Rudie Schaeffer dressed up as the Revolutionary War soldiers in the famous "Spirit of '76" painting and marched out to the field. Veeck then worked the crowd, meeting and greeting fans during the game. Wilbur Wood blanked...
