June 14,1975
vs. New York Yankees
at Shea Stadium

By mid-June Deron Johnson wasn't making anybody forget about Dick Allen. The 36 year old veteran had a batting average hovering around the .220 mark. He did have a few moments, though. He delivered game-breaking or winning hits a couple of times. Not that it helped the team much. They were 24-33, 9 1/2 games back and resting in last place in the AL West. Attendance was also back to pre-Dick Allen levels as well.

June 7,1975
vs. New York Yankees
at White Sox Park

May 16,1975
vs. Cleveland Indians
at White Sox Park

So far, the 1975 version of the White Sox were not shaping up to be a very good team. At one point they were 7-15. By this date they were 12-19 and attendance was down from the previous year. Small crowds, most of them four figures, came out in the cold of April and early May, prompting the usual remarks from the media about the "dwindling" Sox fan base.

One thing that the Sox did provide,...

May 9,1975
vs. Cleveland Indians
at Municipal Stadium

It had been a year and a half since the White Sox had picked up Jim Kaat on waivers. He had made Roland Hemond look like a genius, going 4-1 over the rest of the 1973 season. The next year he went 21-13, including a 7-0 run at the end of the season.

Kaat continued his streak going into 1975, going 4-0 to tie John Rigney and Gary Peters for longest winning streak in club history. He wasn't quite as stingy...
