vs. Cleveland Indians
at Comiskey Park

The Sox get hot in May, going 8-3 over their first 11 games. They came home from a two week road trip to meet the Indians on Friday the 13th, which the ever-creative Veeck promoted as "anti-Superstition Night." Mirrors were brought out to the field and smashed in defiance of old wives' tales. The Sox then slapped the Indians 5-3.

The next day was a bright and early game. The Sox were holding...

vs. Texas Rangers
at Comiskey Park

The Sox end April on a losing note, a 14-4 crushing at the hands of the Rangers in the second of a three game set at Comiskey. It is the team's third loss in a row and puts them at 10-8, in 4th place but only one game out of 1st.

One highlight of the game came in the 8th inning, when Wilbur Wood entered the game in relief. Wilbur, who hadn't played since getting his kneecap shattered on the previous May...

vs. Detroit Tigers
at Tiger Stadium

The home opener win against Boston is the first of five straight for the White Sox, including three straight from the Blue Jays at Comiskey. Richie Zisk swings a hot bat, clubbing five home runs in the early going as the surprising Sox run their record to 9-5.

The two game miniseries against the Tigers in Detroit offered fans a preview of what was to come in the season of '77.

The first...

April 12,1977
vs. Boston Red Sox
at Comiskey Park

The rag-tag White Sox made the expansion Blue Jays look like world beaters, losing 2 of 3 to the new Canadian club before heading back to Chicago to open their home schedule against the other Sox from the east coast.

The two Sox teams couldn't have been any more different. The White Sox were the poor relations from the other side of the tracks, while the Red Sox were the well-fed, well-paid members of...

April 7,1977
vs. Toronto Blue Jays
at Exhibition Stadium

Pessimism was the prevailing emotion as the Sox broke camp ready for the season. The Chicago writers were unanimous in agreement that the Sox would not be serious contenders. Robert Markus and Rick Talley even picked them to finish 7th and last, behind the expansion Seattle Mariners, who had yet to play a single game.

Bill Gleason, one of the few sportswriters in the city who actually cared...
