Games and Moments
April 29, 1970
vs. Baltimore Orioles
at White Sox Park

Oof.

Some days, you just shouldn't get out of bed.

You know you have to, though, because there is money to be made and bills to be paid. So you get up and slog your way through the day, grousing the whole time that it's going to be lousy.. And usually, it is.

The 1970 White Sox were probably going through the "don't wanna go to work" stage by this point. They were 6-11 and mired in the lower half of the AL West. Among their losses was a 16-2 socking at the hands of the Brewers, the erstwhile Pilots. But as bad as it was, nothing could get worse than that loss. Or could it?

The reigning AL Champion Baltimore Orioles came to town. The birds had won 109 games in 1969, only to go down in history as the team that lost the World Series to the Miracle Mets.

The Orioles went into 1970 with something to prove and picked up where they left off, making a wreck of the AL.

On this night the best team in the league met the worst, and the results were predictable and quite painful.

Tommie Sisk was the Sox starter, going up against Jim Palmer. By the 4th inning Sisk was slogging off the mound, grousing about his lousy day.

The Orioles beat up on him and four more pitchers. Elrod Hendricks and Boog Powell homered. The star of the game was centerfielder Paul Blair, who homered three times and drove six runs across the plate.

The Sox were also generous with their defense. Bill Melton, John Matias and Gail Hopkins all committed errors, with Hopkins making two.

There was one bright spot. Bill Melton hit a two run homer, his third, in the 7th.

Final score: Orioles 18, White Sox 2. Some days, you just shouldn't get out of bed.
