In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."
more childhood memories

As I got a little older and my imagination started to flourish, I got hooked on the 1949 Washington Senators. I decided to create a whole fictional team, the one that came thisclose to the pennant and lost. I had a whole lineup and background for the players. I decided that I would no longer be the home run hero, that fell to Joe DiMaggio.
Anyway, I remember two players that I created for that team-slugging 1st baeman Buddy Lewis and pitcher Albert Kramer, who would go on to the Hall of Fame, but his career would forever be defined by the grand slam he gave up in the playoff against the Yankees.
I later got a hold of a Baseball Encyclopedia and looked up the real 1949 Senators-their record was 50-104. I was stunned to see, however, that they actually had a 1st baseman named Buddy Lewis. I couldn't believe it. I wondered-did I see the name years before and apply it when I was creating names for my team, or was it just a freaky coincidence? Mmmm. Never did find out for sure.
