The next day

The Knights celebrated long in their clubhouse, then went out to the French Quarter and partied even longer.

The next day they showed up for the season finale bleary-eyed and toasted. The fans gave them a long, sustained standing ovation when they took the field. Goodman rested most of his regulars as did Lasorda. The Dodgers won the battle of benches 7-0 to draw within 1 game of the Knights at the end. The 16 inning victory the night before had been crucial. The Knights would have been watching the Dodgers celebrate on their home turf had they not pulled that one out.

That did not matter this day, however. Bill Daley flied out for the final out of the regular season, prompting another standing ovation from the crowd. For the first time in 30 years, the final out of the regular season did not mean that the Knights were through for the year. It did, however, mean that the toughest test of the year now lay directly ahead. The 1988 NL East Champion New York Mets awaited them in the National League Championship Series.
