The Old Roman effected changes for 1915. He fired manager Nixey Callahan and surprised people by hiring Clarence "Pants" Rowland, a "busher" who had never played a day in the major leagues. Back then, hiring a manager who had never played in the majors was unheard of.
He also improved the team by purchasing one of the best players in baseball, Eddie Collins of the Philadelphia A's. Connie Mack set about to dismantling his championship club. Collins cost $50,000 and his salary of $15,000 was guaranteed. Commy later added Eddie Murphy from the Mackmen.
By far the deal of the century occurred in August, when the Sox sent three players and cash to the Cleveland Indians for "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, certifiably one of the best hitters in baseball, owner of a .408 average in his rookie year of 1911.
The improvements aded up to a 93-61 record and a 3rd place finish. Collins hit .332, Red Faber and Jim Scott each won 24 games. The Sox were up-and-coming.

The Cubs had an off-year offensively-Heinie Zimmerman slumped to .265 as not one regular topped .300. "Wildfire" Schulte of 1906 fame was still around, age 32 and still swining a pretty good bat-clocking 12 HR and garnering 62 RBI. Hippo Vaughn was the big winner pitching-wise, going 20-12.

The Cubs took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st of Game 1 and lead 5-2 in the 7th when the Sox erupted for 7 runs in the final two frames to take the game, 9-5. The Cubs evened things up in Game 2 via a complete game shutout from Jimmy Lavender.
The rest of the Series would be all White Sox-they would win the next two 5-2 and 5-0 (Game 4 featured a grand slam from Shano Collins). 32,666 turned out to Comiskey Park for Game 5 and watched the Sox score 5 runs in both the 5th and 6th innings to help Reb Russell. The Cubs made 4 errors, two by Zimmerman, to help the Sox out. Russell set the Cubs down 1-2-3 in the 9th to wrap up an 11-3 win.
