In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."
"Super Sox" vs. 1964 Washington Senators
Osteen, Senators put "Super Sox" in stupor
Senators 5, White Sox 1
Wasn't a very good day for the Super Sox, I must say. They squared off against Claude Osteen and the 64 Senators. Osteen looked more like future Dodger teammate Sandy Koufax as he methodically handled the potent Sox lineup, allowing only 1 hit through the first 8 innings. The Sox put runners on in the first 5 innings via walks and an error on Osteen, but the lefty worked his way out of each jam.
The Senators hurler ran into a rough spot in the 9th as he attempted to finish off his 1 hit masterwork (Don Buford's 5th inning single the only Sox hit) but it was then that the Sox came to life, getting one out single from Belle and Ventura, plus a fielder's choice to put Appling on. A Carlos May single drove in a run and Ed Herrmann walked to load them up for pinch hitter Zeke Bonura. Manager Gil Hodges saw enough and pulled Osteen for Ron Kline. The reliever induced Bonura to fly out to centerfield to earn a one-batter save.
Sox starter Tommy John got off to a shaky start and was not helped by his defense. He gave up four straight singles to the first batters of the game, and an Albert Belle error allowed one of three first inning runs to score unearned.
The Sox will face the 1969 Senators in RFK Memorial Stadium next.
