In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

APBA presents..."The Super Sox"

I have decided, after a long layoff, to try and get back into APBA baseball. I have three seasons worth of teams laying arond gathering dust-1964, 1969 and 1936. I bought 1936 first, intending to "recreate" that entire White Sox season, but eventually lost interest. I bought 1964 and 1969 to match up the 1964 Sox and the 1969 Cubs in a mythical "World Series" between two of Chicago's famous also-rans (I would have preferred the 1967 Sox, but that season wasn't available). So now, I have all three seasons sitting around. I decided to have one White Sox team play a "season" against all the other teams, but couldn't decide which one (decisive, aren't I?) That's when I decided to create the "Super Sox."

The idea was to take the best of the three teams (plus the 1997 Sox, which a friend gave me) and put them together as one All-Star White Sox team. I would then match them up against the rest of the teams from the three years. Once I decided on that, the rest would be easy. I just have to basically decide what teams to play in what order. I'll do all three versions of one team at first, in three games sets, one team at home, the other on the road. I just haven't decided on a pattern.

I proceeded to sit down, hash around with the four Sox teams, and picked the best of the crop. It wasn't easy in a few instances. But here is the roster for the "Super Sox":

Starters:

C Ed Herrmann
1B Frank Thomas
2B Don Buford
SS Luke Appling
3B Robin Ventura
LF Albert Belle
CF Floyd Robinson
RF Carlos May

Reserves:

C Luke Sewell
1B Zeke Bonura
IF Luis Aparicio
IF Pete Ward
IF Bill Melton
OF Walt Williams
OF Mike Kreevich

Starting Rotation:

RH Joel Horlen
LH Gary Peters
LH Tommy John
RH Vern Kennedy
RH Ted Lyons

Bullpen:

LH Donald Mossi
RH Eddie Fisher
RH Hoyt Wilhelm
LH Wilbur Wood
LH Juan Pizarro

I'll try to get in a game a day, see where it takes me. I'll write the summary in a manner that might be different, just to break up the monotony. One might be a newpaper article, one a blurb on ESPN, etc. I'll just see what I can come up with on a given day.

The "Super Sox" made their APBA debut against the 1969 Seattle Pilots today, I'll post that game summary next. Any game actions I describe all went down with a roll of the dice, I only add the embellishments.
